Two best examples of Armenian architecture

Armenia was the first nation to officially accept Christianity in AD. 301, and from then on churches and monasteries became important parts of Armenian architecture. Many of the world's oldest Christian buildings were built by Armenians, and their unique building style is still largely replicated today.

We present to you two best examples of Armenian architecture, which were built by different Armenian kingdoms.

1. Mother Cathedral of Etchmiadzin - Vagharshapat, Armavir, Armenia

Etchmiadzin Cathedral is the most important church of the city and was built in AD. 301, becoming one of the oldest temples in the world. The church was founded by one of the most powerful monarchs of Armenia, King Trdat III. the structure has been modified over time, the central part of the building being the oldest, with a large entrance portico and some adjacent chapels added later.

Today, Etchmiadzin Cathedral is the main church for the entire Armenian Apostolic Church, the main religious structure of the Echmiadzin Catholicosate of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

2. Geghard - Goght, Kotayk, Armenia

There are many different isolated monasteries throughout Armenia, some of which date back to the ancient Kingdom of Armenia. Geghard Monastery, located on the mountains, is one of the most impressive. A group of monks began working at the site in the 4th century, but the main church at the center of the complex dates back to the 13th century. Like many other monasteries in the region, Geghard contains many different buildings, including the main church, several small chapels, tombs, living quarters for the monks, and a small fortified wall to protect the residents.

The Geghard Monastery has the most ornately carved interior, and some of the chapels in the complex are actually cut out of the rock. The monastery has been an important pilgrimage site for centuries and contains many historical religious relics. Today, the entire Geghard Monastery is preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
